How last season went
The Green Wave was most certainly the darling of the 2019-20 high school hockey season. Greenway shocked Hermantown in the Section 7A final and then nearly motored its way to a state championship before running into St. Cloud Cathedral. This success put a spotlight on the Green Wave this past season.
Greenway wasn’t an unknown commodity heading into this season. And it showed as the Green Wave struggled. After some tough losses, Greenway found its way. This was especially true with its six-game win streak to end the regular season. The squad finished with a 12-11-1 record and won the Iron Range Conference championship.
In Section 7A, the Green Wave looked to defend their title while being the No. 3 seed. After a win in the quarterfinals, Greenway’s dream of a repeat ended in a loss to Duluth Denfeld in the semifinals.
Who’s back and who’s gone
If you’re a Green Wave fan, you might want to skim past this section. It’s not pretty.
Greenway had its success this past season with an experience group. Ben Troumbly Ben Troumbly Forward Greenway | 2020 State MN (18 goals, 31 assists), Christian Miller Christian Miller Defense Greenway | 2020 State MN (9G, 21A), Mitch Germander (15G, 14A) and Brock Trboyevich (8G, 17A) are all gone via graduation and were the leading men behind the team’s success this past season and previously.
In net, the news doesn’t get much better. Logan Wright was a stalwart as he posted a .909 save percentage in his final season of high school hockey.
What to expect next season
This sort of feels like the end of an era for the Green Wave. They revitalized this community. Hopefully, this resurgence of sorts continues. But there is a lot of work to do.
