How last season went
The story of the season for the Royals might best be summed up in their lack of offense. During the 2019-20 season, they averaged 1.8 goals per game.
That lack of offense played a part in Woodbury’s 1-8-1 start to the regular season. Things did pick up to a certain extent as the Royals finished the regular season on a 5-8-1 pace. That included wins against Roseville, South St. Paul and Mounds View.
Heading into the postseason, Woodbury earned the No. 6 seed in Section 4AA. In the first round, the Royals had their work cut out for them against White Bear Lake. The Bears proved to be too much as they won 4-1.
Who’s back and who’s gone
This Woodbury squad struggled despite significant senior leadership. That included Quinn Krueger (3 goals, 14 assists), Luke Danielson (10G, 8A) and Andrew Zimmerman (7G, 5A). As for the goaltending situation, Austin Carlson Austin Carlson Goalie Woodbury | 2020 State MN (.894 save percentage) and Josh Davis (.885 SV%) are both gone after manning the net most of last season.
As for the returners, the biggest name appears to be Ben Tarlton. He’s set to return following a season where he tallied 7 goals and 5 assists.
What to expect next season
Frankly, there isn’t a lot of returning talent for Royals fans to be excited about. The best bet is that this new group can hit the reset button after a struggle last season and find a way to make some noise in a positive way.
