With the 2020-21 season still months out, it’s time to take a look at teams from all over the State of Hockey and examine what happened this past season and what’s ahead. The next team we’re breaking down is Eagan.
How last season went
For the Wildcats, it’s safe to say the team hit their high note around the Holidays in December and January. Eagan rattled off seven consecutive wins between Dec. 17 and Jan. 2.
The Wildcats found success despite the fact they only outscored their opponents by less than a goal on average. They still managed to pick up wins against Lakeville North, Burnsville and Duluth East during a regular season. Ultimately, they posted a 16-6 record and finished sixth in the South Suburban Conference standings.
As the No. 3 seed in Section 3AA, Eagan matched up against Bloomington Jefferson in the quarterfinals. It was a hard-fought battle as the Wildcats advanced in a 1-0 win. Then, Eagan could not seal the deal and head off to the section final as the Wildcats fell to Burnsville in the semifinals.
Who’s back and who’s gone
Eagan had success during the 2019-20 season. The problem that now persists for the Wildcats is the fact they reached the point they did with a mostly senior-laden lineup. Each of their top four scorers – , Henry Reiff, Aidan Byrne, Max Meekin – graduated after combining for 40 goals and 69 assists.
Meanwhile, the netminding situation doesn’t get much better. Derek Manzella Derek Manzella Goalie Eagan | 2020 State MN graduated after playing in 27 games and posting a .925 save percentage.
What to expect next season
Look, Eagan has been able to reload and consistently put together a competitive product on the ice. That task seems significantly tougher next season as the Wildcats are forced to replace much of their production from last season.
